Some titles that showed up over and over I didn't include; titles like 'Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture', or 'Experiencing Architecture'- these are on every incoming architecture students reading list. Along with Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966), Learning from Las Vegas (1972) forms Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown's classic articulation of a new path for architecture in the face of late Modernism. They embody the complexity and the contradictions in the architecture of the early 1960s. In that sense, life, with all of its complexities and contradictions, always exceeds the limited scope and vision of form as conceived by the architect. There is a coherent reasoning behind all his choices and anyone who wants to understand the fundamentals should read his seminal “Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture”. In his argument for complexity and contradiction in architecture, Venturi refers to Cleanth Brooks' “[justification] of the expression of complexity and contradiction by their necessity as the very essence of art.” (20). €I like complexity and contradiction in architecture. €But an architecture of of complexity and contradiction also embraces the “difficult” number of parts--the duality, and the medium degrees of multiplicity.” Piero della Francesca, Flagellation of Christ, ca. I have chosen to do my response on the article “Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture” by Robert Venturi. The vanguard of this reaction was Robert Venturi's compelling 1966 book, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture . Only on these terms, it is an interesting read. Introduction - Vincent Scully It is probably the most important writing on the making of architecture since Le Corbsier's Vers une Architecture of 1923. From Vincent Scully's introduction to Robert Venturi's Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture: “This is not an easy book. Architecture in the post-war decades toward a sophisticated, historically referential approach with his landmark treatise, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966). Note also that Ouroussof's title is a play on Robert Venturi's groundbreaking Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, a book that could, in part, be called the antidote to America's post-Moses crisis in urban design and architecture. Asked Robert Venturi at the end of his 1966 manifesto, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture , thereby sending modern architecture into a state of turmoil from which it has never really recovered. I do not like the incoherence or arbitrariness of incompetent architecture nor the precious intricacies of picturesqueness or expressionism.
